1. Nelson/Tasman
Known as the sunniest place in New Zealand, you can’t go past Nelson when it comes to the best spot for summer. The gateway to the world-famous Abel Tasman National Park, this region is where you can really do summer right. Whether you want to relax on one of the picturesque beaches or take a kayak out to Split Apple Rock, this is definitely a place you won’t want to miss.
2. Raglan
Raglan is famous for being a bit of a surfer’s paradise, but if you’re not really into skimming the waves, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy. You can marvel at the beauty of Bridal Veil Falls, climb up to the top of Mount Karioi, or enjoy a classic Kiwi dinner of fish and chips as the sun sets.
3. Coromandel
Especially for Aucklanders, the Coromandel Peninsula is known as the place to be in summer – and for good reason. With so many spectacular attractions, including Hot Water Beach, and of course, Cathedral Cove, the Coromandel Peninsula definitely won’t disappoint.
4. Bay of Islands
Another favourite for Aucklanders, the Bay of Islands is a great place to spend those lazy summer days. Whether you love being in or around the water, or you’re a massive history buff, this place has it all – you can take a cruise to see the Hole in the Rock, or check out the historic Waitangi Treaty Grounds.
5. Queenstown
If scorching heat isn’t really your thing, Queenstown might be the place for you. You’ll still enjoy beautiful sunny days, but with refreshing crisp air too. Known more as a winter destination, summer in this beautiful area is definitely underestimated. There are so many great hiking trails and plenty of thrilling jet boat and parasailing adventures to be had.
